I’ll admit it, we watch a fair bit of TV. It’s a mixed bag of stuff – MythBusters, CSI, The Daily Show, NFL Football, Hockey – visually and aurally pretty stimulating stuff I think. Yet regardless of what’s on, our dog, Roni, remains profoundly oblivious. She chews her tennis ball, or lies in her bed, or occasionally hops up on the couch to have her belly rubbed.
I can’t help but wonder why this is. Isn’t there at least a modicum of entertainment to be found there? Not even the Dog Whisperer, with all it’s barking and whining mutts, gets a glance. The TV is pretty much the only thing to watch most of the time around here for her. Sure, we might get a deer or two in the backyard – and Roni will watch the backdoor for glimpses of them for hours – but when she’s not doing that the TV simply just doesn’t exist in her world.
I find this very odd. It can’t be that she doesn’t see or hear it, with all it’s flashing lights and loud noises. So either as a dog she’s just not wired to perceive the thing, or she’s simply decided that it’s not worth her attention. Either way, the scary thing is that I’m pretty sure this says a lot more about us than it does her.
I’d explore this further, but I need to catch up on my Junkyard Wars reruns.
One response to “Maybe it’s because dogs don’t see color…”
Very interesting. I was watching NGC with my yellow lab in the room quite awhile ago, and the minute a leopard walked into the frame on the television, she perked up and ran to the television curiously. When it walked out of the frame, she went behind the TV in search of the leopard. She’ll occasionally watch geese and other dogs on TV when they’re on.
